ADHD in Women

A lot of women reach their 30s, 40s or beyond before anyone suggests ADHD.
If you’ve wondered about it for a while, an ADHD assessment is a good place to start.

The signs are often there. They're just easy to miss.

Often it comes up after a child is assessed, during a stretch of burnout, or when perimenopause makes everything harder to manage. ADHD presents differently in women, which is a big part of why it gets overlooked. At Akkadian we assess it with that in mind, including the anxiety, low mood and hormonal changes that often come with it.

We also understand the overlap between ADHD and autism, including AuDHD in women, where both can contribute to the patterns that bring someone to assessment.

Why is ADHD so often missed in women?

In women, ADHD is often hard to spot. As a child you might have been the happy one, easily distracted, not great at focusing unless something really had your interest, but managing well enough that no one worried.

As you got older you built your own workarounds, lists, reminders, late nights catching up, a lot of effort no one really saw. It tends to look like inattention, overwhelm and anxiety rather than the restlessness people expect.

A lot of women manage this way for years, sometimes decades, by working harder and covering the gaps. Many are treated for anxiety or depression along the way, while the ADHD underneath is never considered.

If this sounds familiar, it’s worth getting properly assessed.

What ADHD can look like in women

There’s no single way ADHD shows up, but some patterns come up again and again. You might recognise a few of these:

Hyperfocus

You can hyperfocus on something that grabs you, then can’t make yourself start the things that don’t.

Busy Mind

Your mind stays busy and rarely switches off, even when you’re exhausted.

Get in a muddle

You lose track of time, double-book, or pay things late, even though you care about getting them right.

Overthinking

Criticism or rejection lands hard and stays with you longer than it should.

Imposter

People tell you how capable you are, while privately you feel like you’re only just keeping up.

How hormones affect ADHD in women

Oestrogen acts on the same brain chemistry involved in ADHD.

So many women notice their focus, mood and memory shift across the month, and again through perimenopause and menopause. It’s common to feel like coping strategies that used to work start failing in your 40s, for a lot of women, that’s the point they come to us.

We take this into account when we assess, rather than treating it as a separate issue.
